Our Multi-Engine Piston Class Rating (MEP) & Instrument Rating (IR) with Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) training is an essential step in launching your career as a commercial airline pilot.
Course overview
A Multi-Engine Piston (MEP) Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) is designed to increase the proficiency of your practical flying skills and theoretical knowledge to a commercial standard. So you are equipped with advanced flight training skills to propel you onto your intermediate training.
The Multi-Engine Piston (MEP) class rating allows you to fly a twin-engine aircraft and fly the aircraft solely with reference to the in-cockpit instrumentation allowing you to fly in conditions with reduced visibility such as in the clouds.
A MEP CPL & IR can be completed as part of our Modular ATPL course which offers cadets greater flexibility to pay and train for their frozen ATPL qualification in bite-size chunks.
After successful completion of the MEP CPL & IR, you will need to complete Instrument Rating (IR) skills test, Upset Prevention & Recovery Training (UPRT) and APS Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC) training.

Entry criteria
Cadets will need to hold a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) with 150 flying hours and have completed their Theoretical Knowledge training before they can begin their MEP IR CPL training. If you do not hold a PPL and/or have 150 flying hours logged, our PPL training course and our Hours Building programme can get you there. Age and height | Be at least 17 to submit an application and at least 18 to commence training. Minimum height 5 ft. 2 in. (157 cm), maximum height 6 ft. 3 in. (191 cm). Applicants who fall outside of this may still apply but will need an ergonomic assessment in our training aircraft and simulators. |
Language | Fluent in English (spoken and written). Non-native English speakers must achieve level 5.5 individual and overall in IELTS or equivalent ICAO level 4 prior to start of training. We offer an English Language Proficiency course for international students:

Education | Hold a minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) in different subjects at grade C/4 or above, which must include Mathematics, Science and English Language. OR Be able to demonstrate that you have successfully completed secondary or high school education (or equivalent). |
Medical | Be able to obtain: UKCAA Class 1 Medical if you are training for a UKCAA ATPL licence. OR EASA Class 1 Medical if you are training for an EASA ATPL licence. |
Visas | Studying in Europe: Unrestricted right to live, study and work in the European Economic Area (EEA)/Switzerland (e.g. EEA/Swiss national, UK national with EU settled or pre-settled status, etc). OR Meet the European Union requirements to qualify for an EU Student or Study visa. Studying in the UK: Unrestricted right to live, study and work in the UK (e.g. UK national, EU national with settled or pre-settled status, etc). OR Meet the United Kingdom Visa & Immigration Service (UKVI) requirements to qualify for a Visitor (study for six months or less) or Student visa (study for more than six months). |
Background checks | Produce a criminal record check (CRC) basic disclosure certificate before training can commence. |

Selection process onto the MEP CPL IR course
1. Overview
Selection is mandatory. You will not be required to sit the technical elements of selection (subject to PPL logbook review by our selection team). You will still be required to attend an interview.
2. Application screening
Your application will be screened by our selection team who will contact you if you pass our screening.
3. Selection day
Providing your application passes our screening process you will then be invited to your selection day which will consist of an interview.

Cost of MEP IR CPL: £39,500 (inc. VAT)

- Initial deposit of £7,900
- 4x instalment of £7,900
- Payment schedule will be confirmed at time of booking

What are my career prospects?
Once you have successfully completed your Multi-Engine Piston Class Rating (MEP) Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) & Instrument Rating (IR) these combined make up a 'frozen ATPL'. With a 'frozen ATPL', you'll be able to apply for roles as a First Officer or Co-Pilot.
We recommend you go on to complete your UPRT and APS MCC training which will place you in a much better position to secure your first role with a UK and European airline.
